Why are Facilities Mangers the key to a successful business?

Posted by Dolphin Solutions on 17-May-2017 09:28:50

At Dolphin Solutions, we understand the importance of the facilities management (FM) industry and the role it plays in enabling positive experiences in the workplace. Facilities Managers are often described as the unsung heroes of the built environment as they ensure the safe running of a business, dedicated to maintaining the efficiency and usability of our workplaces.

As we know, ensuring a clean and tidy workplace is vital to any business. The organisation and hygiene levels of a business directly affect its efficiency, productivity and morale of employees. Research from Jeffrey Campbell, PhD chair of FM programmes at Brigham Young University, reported that 88% of employees say that productivity, concentration and learning is hampered in dirty and dull workplaces.

Today, 17th of May, World FM Day celebrates the global facilities management (FM) community, looking at how facilities teams enable positive experiences around the globe.

To celebrate, we’ve looked at some of the ways we think facilities teams are unsung heroes and why they are the key to a successful business.

World Water Day 2017: Why waste water?

Posted by Dolphin Solutions on 22-Mar-2017 15:22:00

On the 22nd March, the UN’s World Water Day is taking place, and will continue to focus on the importance of giving people the right to have access to freshwater. This year’s theme will pose the question; ‘Why waste water?” and will look at the relationship between water and wastewater in the search to improve water quality and look at treating and reusing wastewater.

Globally, over 80% of wastewater generated by society, flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused. Yet, 900million people still do not have access to safe water with over 663 million people live without a safe supply of water close to home.

For the 1.2 Billion people living in areas of water scarcity, where sanitation is poor and infrastructure is inadequate, a good option is to consider water waste as a solution rather than a problem.

World Toilet Day

Posted by Dolphin Solutions on 19-Nov-2016 00:00:00

On the 19th November 2016 World Toilet Day is taking place and this year they are raising awareness of the importance of suitable sanitation facilities in workplaces across the world, a cause that is also of concern to us at Dolphin. You’d be surprised to hear that of the world’s seven billion people, 2.4 billion people do not have developed sanitation in the workplace and this must change.

In the UK, we are fortunate to have quality toilet facilities available to us at work with many businesses striving to provide pleasant and hygienic washroom facilities for staff – something that we often take for granted.

However, the UK loses £4bn each year due to avoidable illness. With just a few small changes to washroom environments, this statistic could be notably improved. 39% of office workers in the UK also believe that improving office hygiene would increase their level of job satisfaction.

Global Handwashing Day

Posted by Dolphin Solutions on 13-Oct-2016 00:00:00

Recent research has revealed that 46% of people still go into work despite being ill. It was also found that 87% of employees blame their workplace for making them ill. Effective handwashing is essential in office environments to help combat sickness, in addition to healthcare establishments, schools and restaurants. In fact, handwashing is essential wherever you are.

To highlight the importance of handwashing, the UN’s 2016 Global Handwashing Day takes place on 15th October. This year’s theme is “Make Handwashing a Habit!” with the aim of fostering a global and local culture of handwashing with soap, whilst also raising awareness of the benefits.

The average person's hands carry at least 3,000 different bacteria. You may also be surprised to find that research carried out by hygiene experts from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), identified that faecal bacteria is present on many everyday objects including 14% of banknotes and 10% of credit cards.

Germs can enter the body in many ways including through our eyes, nose, mouth, and via the food we eat. Soap is essential during the handwashing process as it can help to banish much of this bacteria from our hands.
